Issue 28 – November 2024
£6.47 – £8.47 Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product pageThe near-total destruction of the medieval Palace of Westminster, the residence of English medieval kings, is without question one of England’s greatest cultural losses. In this issue of the Antiquary, we explore the history and layout of the palace and look at some of the great artistic treasures it once contained. We examine how what was once the primary residence of kings became the political and legal hub of the English nation. We then move on to look at the inadequacy of the palace as a seat of both Parliament and the law courts in the eighteenth century, the various proposals for its replacement and the piecemeal process of destruction that culminated in the inevitability of the great fire of 1834. Lastly, as it is November, the third article looks at the events of November 1605 and the Gunpowder Plot, and how the complex and chaotic geography of the medieval palace enabled this plot to very nearly succeed.

Issue 27 – October 2024
£6.47 – £8.47 Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product pageThe two articles this month are quite unintentionally linked by the theme of Italian exile. In the first article we look at the life of Sir Robert Dudley – the son of the Elizabethan courtier, Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester. He was born out of wedlock, primarily as his father was still hoping to marry Elizabeth I. His life was entirely shaped by the circumstances of his birth. He spent the last forty years of his life in Italy, where as a man of great ability he had a very productive life – but he entered a bigamous marriage there, and left behind in England a wife and family who had to fend for themselves. The second exile was William Beckford, who was the wealthiest man in England in his lifetime. His wealth was inherited when he was ten and was built upon the profit of plantations and slaves. His ten years of exile, were a consequence of social disgrace. He returned to a self-imposed exile in which he poured all his money and his soul into one of the most extraordinary fantasy buildings ever constructed in England: Fonthill Abbey. The study of the past very often brings us face to face with actions and behaviours that makes us uncomfortable, and social rules that are seemingly inexplicable. The story of these two individuals, are no exception. Although men of great ability, their lives were shaped by the actions of others and the social norms of the times they lived in, but their behaviour was, at times, also deeply questionable.

Issue 26 – September 2024
£6.47 – £8.47 Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product pageThis month I have decided to depart from my usual pattern, and bring to you two articles, rather than my usual three. I found as I was writing the first article, that the character I was writing about was so compelling, and the intrigue he was embroiled in so complex, that he deserved more extensive attention than I would usually give. Titus Oates, was a compulsive liar, who in the pursuit of personal renown was responsible for the deaths of numerous men. His pathology is intriguing and difficult to understand, but he tapped into the anti-Catholic hysteria of his time. I felt that the ugliness of the character and story of Titus Oates, required an article that examined, in some depth, a work of great beauty – and so in my second article this month I focus on the ‘Golden Chapel’ at Tong in Shropshire. It is an incredible piece of highly decorated late medieval architecture. As well as looking at the works of art and memorials within it, I look too at the motivation, piety and devotion behind the creation of this extraordinary space.

Issue 25 – August 2024
£6.47 – £8.47 Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product pageThe articles in this issue derive from a recent trip to North Yorkshire to reacquaint myself with the great medieval abbeys of the county after twenty years. It is difficult to choose what to write about, that can begin to do these incredible sites justice, but I have pulled out three unusual aspects of medieval monastic history to share. Firstly, I introduce a rare collection of medieval ghost stories originating in the scriptorium of Byland Abbey, that first came to the attention of scholars through the research of M. R. James in the 1920s. I then move on to look in some depth at the lives of the Carthusian monks of Mount Grace, using the evidence of the monk’s cell reconstructed in the 1980s following a thorough archaeological investigation. Lastly, I consider the post-dissolution history of Rievaulx Abbey and the role of its tumbling ruins as inspiration for the picturesque and romantic movements of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Issue 24 – July 2024
£6.47 – £8.47 Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product pageWelcome to the July 2024 issue of The Antiquary. Some of you may have seen the recent video I released on YouTube about the lost palace of Whitehall, the principal royal palace in Tudor and Stuart London. In this issue, I begin by looking at three terracotta busts, portrait heads that were part of the royal collection at Whitehall and somehow managed to survive the fire that consumed the palace in 1698, to be rediscovered in a rag-and-bone shop in the 1760s. Then we look at another extraordinary lost structure, Old London Bridge, which has long since been knocked down; it didn’t fall down as the nursery rhyme suggests! As usual, there is always a thread connecting the various articles, and the thread between the first article and the second is Cardinal John Fisher, Bishop of Rochester; he commissioned the terracotta heads, and following his unjust execution at the hands of Henry VIII, his real head ended up on a spike on London Bridge. The third article looks at the survival rather than the loss of historic buildings, and we look at the twelfth-century houses in the city of Lincoln – again, there is a royal theme, for recent research suggests that one of these was an English royal palace.t I do hope you enjoy the issue, which marks the end of the second year of this publication, and I want to thank you for all of your support over that period of that time – there are lots more to come!

Issue 23 – June 2024
£6.47 – £8.47 Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product pageWelcome to the June 2024 issue of The Antiquary. I often find when we start to write the magazine each month, that the articles begin to take shape and then common links and themes emerge between them – and this issue is no exception. The first article looks at the genre of Vanitas painting in the Netherlands in the seventeenth century, a genre in which the artists through complex allegory reflect on the vanity of humanity’s accomplishments in the face of death. One of the paintings I focus on is an allegory of the life of King Charles I and Queen Henrietta Maria. Then we go on to look at the life of Jefferey (sic) Hudson, the court dwarf to Henrietta Maria – a man who found himself in many scrapes and lived a remarkable ans surprising life. Despite rising high (in court if not in stature!), he has no monument, and lies in a pauper’s grave and is largely forgotten. Lastly, is an article in which I lament the loss of a beautiful and beloved building, Goltho church in Lincolnshire, which was recently ravaged by fire. The running theme: that life, creation and people’s accomplishments are fragile indeed.

£6.47 – £8.47 Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product pageWe begin the magazine this month by looking at an aspect of the medieval ceremonial of English medieval Holy Week. Focusing on the ritual of the sepulchre and the vigil, we look at the material evidence for the sepulchre and whether the objects that are generally known as Easter Sepulchres are any such a thing at all. Then we head to south Lincolnshire where we introduce to a curious medieval bridge at Crowland, which has an interesting history and no practical purpose. Lastly, we look at the hagiography of St Guthlac, the founder of Crowland, an ascetic known as the English St Anthony, and who lived the final years of his life in a converted long barrow!

Issue 13 – August 2023
£6.47 – £8.47 Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product pageWelcome to the August 2023 issue of The Antiquary. In this issue, we have two articles that are about artistic idealism. Firstly, we look at a couple of medieval monuments in Derbyshire created in the fifteenth century; they are among the finest examples of the sculptors’ craft and portray an idealised image of those commemorated and express an inflated view of their societal position. In the religious climate of the late Middle Ages, people used their earthly resources to ensure that they were remembered once they had departed in the prayers of the living. In the second article, we look briefly at the tradition of employing the poor at funerals to pray for the better off. Lastly, we return to idealism and look at the story of a man who was among the wealthiest individuals of his age. He used his wealth to improve the lot of others and tame a wilderness, a landscape that, two hundred years after his death, still inspires people today.

£6.47 – £8.47 Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product pageWelcome to the July 2023 issue of The Antiquary, and in this issue, we celebrate a full year of the magazine. I thank all of you subscribers and supporters who have made this possible. This issue is one of our periodic albums focusing on a particular theme in the History of Art. It looks closely at the portrayal of angels, with images from both an English and Welsh context, primarily from the Middle Ages. The essay running through the issue focuses on the textual sources for the iconography of angels, both the biblical and broader tradition of the Church, and the influence of Pseudo-Dionysius on the understanding of angelology. I do hope you enjoy this issue.

Issue 11 – June 2023
£6.47 – £8.47 Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product pageWelcome to the June 2023 issue of The Antiquary. Summer is with us, and I am currently out and about doing what I enjoy the most, visiting sites across Britain with my camera – finding beautiful places and objects to share with all of you later in the year – I hope you have an equally enjoyable, restful and peaceful summer. In this summer issue, I bring you three articles. Firstly, I explore the extraordinary story of the development of the saintly cult of King Henry VI, whose graves, first at Chertsey and then at Windsor, became the focus of popular devotion. Then I explore a peculiar character that was common in late medieval European art and folklore, the Wodewose (pronounced ‘wood-wus’) – the wild man, and why such a figure was so popular. Lastly, I take you on a photographic tour of one of England’s most enchanting churches, Inglesham in Wiltshire, and explore why this beautiful building is so significant. I hope you enjoy the issue.

Issue 10 – May 2023
£6.47 – £8.47 Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product pageWelcome to the May 2023 issue of The Antiquary. With the coronation of King Charles III now fast approaching, it may well be all over by the time you get your copy of the magazine. We have decided to give you an issue with a royal flavour. There are two articles on the history of the coronation itself – the first looks at the extraordinary elements of Catholic ceremonial and regalia within the ceremony, which survive the English Reformation. The second looks at the most extravagant and absurd coronation – that of George IV (shown above receiving his regalia) in 1821. Sticking with the royal theme, the first article in the issue looks at the history of the display of royal arms in English churches, why they were displayed, and what the heraldry signifies. Lastly, for a bit of variety, on a recent visit to Norfolk, we came across the story of the bizarre burial of a Norfolk gentleman – we thought we would share that with you. As well as that article, the article on the royal arms has a Norfolk bias, illustrated solely with examples from the county – but that indicates what a rich source of treasures Norfolk is; we never tire of exploring its history and churches. We do hope you enjoy the issue.

Issue 9 – April 2023
£6.47 – £8.47 Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product pageWelcome to the April 2023 issue of The Antiquary. This month, we give you a mix of articles and features on both saints and sinners. We introduce you to a delightful church in the countryside near Berkshire in southeast England, with glorious medieval wall paintings and the tomb of a man and his wife, who may have had blue blood. Then an article on a fascinating cave complex in the wilds of Derbyshire that also has strong royal connections and may have been the hermitage of a deposed Anglo-Saxon king over a thousand years ago. Dick Turpin, the highwayman, was no king but a scoundrel, and in the following article, we look at his life and wicked exploits. We explore how his reputation was altered and somewhat improved by the novelist’s pen. Lastly, an article about Christian iconography looks at the mysterious legend of the girdle of the Blessed Virgin Mary, how it originated and the surviving relics of Mary’s belt. We do hope you enjoy the issue.

Issue 8 – March 2023
£6.47 – £8.47 Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product pageThis issue begins with an exploration of a bit of a mystery – a rare thing in England – the shrine of a medieval saint with the relics still within it, it is a mystery how it survived, but it is even more of a puzzle trying to work out who the saint within was. The second article is about an unusual office associated with the English coronation, that of the King’s Champion; we look at the role and how it originated, and again there is an air of mystery about how it came into being. Then we look at an aspect of medieval iconography in an article examining the eastern origin of two of the most popular images in late medieval Western art – the Mass of St Gregory and the Man of Sorrows. There’s little mystery here about how they came to be: they came into the Western artistic lexicon through tall stories told to pilgrims! Then lastly, a fourth article is about a church building in a remote part of the Black Mountains in Wales, a building full of medieval treasures. There are two mysteries here: the first is the identity and story of the early medieval saint that the church is dedicated to; the second is how on earth this building has retained some of the unique medieval fixtures and fittings within it. I hope you enjoy reading it.

Issue 7 – February 2023
£6.47 – £8.47 Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product pageThe churches of Norfolk contain one of the most remarkable collections of late medieval art in Western Europe – they are a series of panel paintings incorporated into screen work, most notably rood, or as they are more appropriately called, chancel screens. Some of these paintings are of such fine quality that they are of international importance. If they were hung in an art gallery in a major city, they would be well known and acclaimed – but because they are to be found in isolated churches, they are not appreciated as much as they ought to be. In this issue of The Antiquary, we want to share examples of this great artistic legacy to give some sense of the significance, purpose, and motives behind their creation. In many cases, these works of art, like our medieval churches in England in general, are now fragile and perilous. Unless they become better known, we risk losing an artistic treasure and essential source material for our medieval ancestors’ religious and social life.

Issue 6 – January 2023
£6.47 – £8.47 Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product pageThis month’s issue focuses on various buildings and objects related to the turbulent time of the English Reformation or a response to it. We begin with an article on the remains of two splendid fifteenth-century vestments from Norfolk, which survive due to recycling after the Reformation. Then an article on ‘ritualism’ in the twentieth-century Church of England and a set of baroque furnishings by Martin Travers for a church in Berkshire. We look at the history of a woodcut found in a book printed in the reign of Mary Tudor, a book that formed part of the re-equipping of English churches after the iconoclasm of the reign of Edward VI. Lastly, we introduce you to battered painted panels from a screen in a Norfolk church and discuss what these panels tell us about devotion in early sixteenth-century Norfolk.

£6.47 – £8.47 Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product pageDecember’s issue of The Antiquary is suitably seasonal, with three articles that provide a bit of Christmas colour. The first article is on a building that comes alive at this time of year, an atmospheric medieval house that is very much at its best with a fire lit and candles burning. Then an article on two men who rarely lit fires and rarely lit candles, two misers who were the inspiration for Dicken’s character Ebenezer Scrooge – there was not much Christmas cheer in the mansions of the Elwes family. Then lastly, an article on the history of Father Christmas, tracing the origins of this popular Christmas character, who brings good cheer to hearth and home, in the song and folklore of the late Middle Ages.

Issue 3 – October 2022
£6.47 – £8.47 Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product pageDeath in the Western world today is often sanitised and hidden from view. Medieval people had the same fears as we have about death but were perhaps more sanguine and more prepared to reflect on the brevity of life than we are now because death was less hidden. Mortality among the young was high; pestilence carried people off with great regularity – people often lived in close-knit communities and faced the reality of death daily. People usually died at home, and the sight of dead bodies tightly wrapped in figure-hugging shrouds, buried in shallow graves within the churchyard, or for the wealthier members of society below the floor of the parish church itself, was part of the typical medieval life experience. In this issue, we explore the subject of medieval death and the monuments that medieval people erected to their dead.

Issue 2 – September 2022
£6.47 – £8.47 Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product pageThis month’s issue is a miscellany of articles relating to remarkable art and architectural survivals. We have the story of a man of great ambition who was so desirous to be remembered forever that he laid down four monuments to himself, only one of which remains and is among the most extraordinary in England. Then the legend of a youth who inherited a kingdom and gave it all up for a life of prayer and the remarkable architectural legacy he left behind. Lastly, two articles on objects and furnishings that really should have been destroyed in the English Reformation – a set of medieval vestments found in a remote part of Lincolnshire and used by a recusant family that tells the story of their enduring Catholicism; and lastly, a church in an equally isolated spot in Wales, where despite the odds, it retains the rustic remains of its medieval rood screen, within a building of great charm and beauty.

Issue 1 – August 2022
£6.47 – £8.47 Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product pageQuite unintentionally, but with serendipity, the editor is rather glad that the articles offered this month have themed themselves – in essence, the first three articles are all about the way the genius of individuals can be realised through a sharing of ideas and how that can infect others with a creative spark. We begin by looking at Sir Thomas More and how his connection with the great thinkers of his age led to the publication of his magnum opus ‘Utopia’, a book that launched the artistic career of Henry VIII’s court painter Hans Holbein. Then in a profusely illustrated article, we look at one of the delicious works of the ecclesiastical designer Sir Ninian Comper and how his relationship with the Duke of Newcastle and their joint love of the Middle Ages resulted in the creation of a Gothic, devotional fantasy at Egmanton in Nottinghamshire which still delights us today. Lastly, because the editor fancied being a little askew, the final article focuses on a man who couldn’t be more different to the gregarious More and Comper, a man who withdrew from the world: his name is John Bigg, a peculiar misanthrope – whose story is both odd and unresolved.
