The articles in this issue derive from a recent trip to North Yorkshire to reacquaint myself with the great medieval abbeys of the county after twenty years.  It is difficult to choose what to write about, that can begin to do these incredible sites justice, but I have pulled out three unusual aspects of medieval monastic history to share.  Firstly, I introduce a rare collection of medieval ghost stories originating in the scriptorium of Byland Abbey, that first came to the attention of scholars through the research of M. R. James in the 1920s.  I then move on to look in some depth at the lives of the Carthusian monks of Mount Grace, using the evidence of the monk’s cell reconstructed in the 1980s following a thorough archaeological investigation.  Lastly, I consider the post-dissolution history of Rievaulx Abbey and the role of its tumbling ruins as inspiration for the picturesque and romantic movements of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
