In February’s issue, apart from a very brief foray into medieval history, we are primarily sticking to subjects that are in the early modern period. We first take you on a visit to one of the most extraordinary churches in the country – we couldn’t agree more with Sir Nikolaus Pevsner in his ‘Buildings of England’ series, when he writes about St Mary’s Whitby in Yorkshire, that it is: ‘one of the churches one is fondest of in all of England’. Then follows a brief biography of a man that it is impossible to be fond of, Matthew Hopkins, the so-called Witchfinder General, as we look at the role of this young man in the witch hysteria that gripped eastern England in the mid seventeenth century. Lastly, we examine the history of a building well known throughout the world, and that some people are immensely fond of (I think), Buckingham Palace – although in this article we look beyond the present structure, to the buildings that came before it, and how they shaped the location and form of the primary residence of the British monarchy.
