The two articles this month are quite unintentionally linked by the theme of Italian exile. In the first article we look at the life of Sir Robert Dudley – the son of the Elizabethan courtier, Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester. He was born out of wedlock, primarily as his father was still hoping to marry Elizabeth I. His life was entirely shaped by the circumstances of his birth. He spent the last forty years of his life in Italy, where as a man of great ability he had a very productive life – but he entered a bigamous marriage there, and left behind in England a wife and family who had to fend for themselves. The second exile was William Beckford, who was the wealthiest man in England in his lifetime. His wealth was inherited when he was ten and was built upon the profit of plantations and slaves. His ten years of exile, were a consequence of social disgrace. He returned to a self-imposed exile in which he poured all his money and his soul into one of the most extraordinary fantasy buildings ever constructed in England: Fonthill Abbey. The study of the past very often brings us face to face with actions and behaviours that makes us uncomfortable, and social rules that are seemingly inexplicable. The story of these two individuals, are no exception. Although men of great ability, their lives were shaped by the actions of others and the social norms of the times they lived in, but their behaviour was, at times, also deeply questionable.

This month I have decided to depart from my usual pattern, and bring to you two articles, rather than my usual three. I found as I was writing the first article, that the character I was writing about was so compelling, and the intrigue he was embroiled in so complex, that he deserved more extensive attention than I would usually give. Titus Oates, was a compulsive liar, who in the pursuit of personal renown was responsible for the deaths of numerous men. His pathology is intriguing and difficult to understand, but he tapped into the anti-Catholic hysteria of his time. I felt that the ugliness of the character and story of Titus Oates, required an article that examined, in some depth, a work of great beauty – and so in my second article this month I focus on the ‘Golden Chapel’ at Tong in Shropshire. It is an incredible piece of highly decorated late medieval architecture. As well as looking at the works of art and memorials within it, I look too at the motivation, piety and devotion behind the creation of this extraordinary space.

The articles in this issue derive from a recent trip to North Yorkshire to reacquaint myself with the great medieval abbeys of the county after twenty years. It is difficult to choose what to write about, that can begin to do these incredible sites justice, but I have pulled out three unusual aspects of medieval monastic history to share. Firstly, I introduce a rare collection of medieval ghost stories originating in the scriptorium of Byland Abbey, that first came to the attention of scholars through the research of M. R. James in the 1920s. I then move on to look in some depth at the lives of the Carthusian monks of Mount Grace, using the evidence of the monk’s cell reconstructed in the 1980s following a thorough archaeological investigation. Lastly, I consider the post-dissolution history of Rievaulx Abbey and the role of its tumbling ruins as inspiration for the picturesque and romantic movements of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Welcome to the July 2024 issue of The Antiquary. Some of you may have seen the recent video I released on YouTube about the lost palace of Whitehall, the principal royal palace in Tudor and Stuart London. In this issue, I begin by looking at three terracotta busts, portrait heads that were part of the royal collection at Whitehall and somehow managed to survive the fire that consumed the palace in 1698, to be rediscovered in a rag-and-bone shop in the 1760s. Then we look at another extraordinary lost structure, Old London Bridge, which has long since been knocked down; it didn’t fall down as the nursery rhyme suggests! As usual, there is always a thread connecting the various articles, and the thread between the first article and the second is Cardinal John Fisher, Bishop of Rochester; he commissioned the terracotta heads, and following his unjust execution at the hands of Henry VIII, his real head ended up on a spike on London Bridge. The third article looks at the survival rather than the loss of historic buildings, and we look at the twelfth-century houses in the city of Lincoln – again, there is a royal theme, for recent research suggests that one of these was an English royal palace.t I do hope you enjoy the issue, which marks the end of the second year of this publication, and I want to thank you for all of your support over that period of that time – there are lots more to come!

Welcome to the June 2024 issue of The Antiquary. I often find when we start to write the magazine each month, that the articles begin to take shape and then common links and themes emerge between them – and this issue is no exception. The first article looks at the genre of Vanitas painting in the Netherlands in the seventeenth century, a genre in which the artists through complex allegory reflect on the vanity of humanity’s accomplishments in the face of death. One of the paintings I focus on is an allegory of the life of King Charles I and Queen Henrietta Maria. Then we go on to look at the life of Jefferey (sic) Hudson, the court dwarf to Henrietta Maria – a man who found himself in many scrapes and lived a remarkable ans surprising life. Despite rising high (in court if not in stature!), he has no monument, and lies in a pauper’s grave and is largely forgotten. Lastly, is an article in which I lament the loss of a beautiful and beloved building, Goltho church in Lincolnshire, which was recently ravaged by fire. The running theme: that life, creation and people’s accomplishments are fragile indeed.

We begin the magazine this month by looking at an aspect of the medieval ceremonial of English medieval Holy Week. Focusing on the ritual of the sepulchre and the vigil, we look at the material evidence for the sepulchre and whether the objects that are generally known as Easter Sepulchres are any such a thing at all. Then we head to south Lincolnshire where we introduce to a curious medieval bridge at Crowland, which has an interesting history and no practical purpose. Lastly, we look at the hagiography of St Guthlac, the founder of Crowland, an ascetic known as the English St Anthony, and who lived the final years of his life in a converted long barrow!

This issue begins with an exploration of a bit of a mystery – a rare thing in England – the shrine of a medieval saint with the relics still within it, it is a mystery how it survived, but it is even more of a puzzle trying to work out who the saint within was. The second article is about an unusual office associated with the English coronation, that of the King’s Champion; we look at the role and how it originated, and again there is an air of mystery about how it came into being. Then we look at an aspect of medieval iconography in an article examining the eastern origin of two of the most popular images in late medieval Western art – the Mass of St Gregory and the Man of Sorrows. There’s little mystery here about how they came to be: they came into the Western artistic lexicon through tall stories told to pilgrims! Then lastly, a fourth article is about a church building in a remote part of the Black Mountains in Wales, a building full of medieval treasures. There are two mysteries here: the first is the identity and story of the early medieval saint that the church is dedicated to; the second is how on earth this building has retained some of the unique medieval fixtures and fittings within it. The churches of Norfolk contain one of the most remarkable collections of late medieval art in Western Europe – they are a series of panel paintings incorporated into screen work, most notably rood, or as they are more appropriately called, chancel screens. Some of these paintings are of such fine quality that they are of international importance. Death in the Western world today is often sanitised and hidden from view. Medieval people had the same fears as we have about death but were perhaps more sanguine and more prepared to reflect on the brevity of life than we are now because death was less hidden. Mortality among the young was high; pestilence carried people off with great regularity – people often lived in close-knit communities and faced the reality of death daily. People usually died at home, and the sight of dead bodies tightly wrapped in figure-hugging shrouds, buried in shallow graves within the churchyard, or for the wealthier members of society below the floor of the parish church itself, was part of the typical medieval life experience. In this issue, we explore the subject of medieval death and the monuments that medieval people erected to their dead.

Quite unintentionally, but with serendipity, the editor is rather glad that the articles offered this month have themed themselves – in essence, the first three articles are all about the way the genius of individuals can be realised through a sharing of ideas and how that can infect others with a creative spark. We begin by looking at Sir Thomas More and how his connection with the great thinkers of his age led to the publication of his magnum opus ‘Utopia’, a book that launched the artistic career of Henry VIII’s court painter Hans Holbein. Then in a profusely illustrated article, we look at one of the delicious works of the ecclesiastical designer Sir Ninian Comper and how his relationship with the Duke of Newcastle and their joint love of the Middle Ages resulted in the creation of a Gothic, devotional fantasy at Egmanton in Nottinghamshire which still delights us today. Lastly, because the editor fancied being a little askew, the final article focuses on a man who couldn’t be more different to the gregarious More and Comper, a man who withdrew from the world: his name is John Bigg, a peculiar misanthrope – whose story is both odd and unresolved.
