Issue 11 – June 2023
£6.47 – £8.47 Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product pageWelcome to the June 2023 issue of The Antiquary. Summer is with us, and I am currently out and about doing what I enjoy the most, visiting sites across Britain with my camera – finding beautiful places and objects to share with all of you later in the year – I hope you have an equally enjoyable, restful and peaceful summer. In this summer issue, I bring you three articles. Firstly, I explore the extraordinary story of the development of the saintly cult of King Henry VI, whose graves, first at Chertsey and then at Windsor, became the focus of popular devotion. Then I explore a peculiar character that was common in late medieval European art and folklore, the Wodewose (pronounced ‘wood-wus’) – the wild man, and why such a figure was so popular. Lastly, I take you on a photographic tour of one of England’s most enchanting churches, Inglesham in Wiltshire, and explore why this beautiful building is so significant. I hope you enjoy the issue.

Issue 10 – May 2023
£6.47 – £8.47 Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product pageWelcome to the May 2023 issue of The Antiquary. With the coronation of King Charles III now fast approaching, it may well be all over by the time you get your copy of the magazine. We have decided to give you an issue with a royal flavour. There are two articles on the history of the coronation itself – the first looks at the extraordinary elements of Catholic ceremonial and regalia within the ceremony, which survive the English Reformation. The second looks at the most extravagant and absurd coronation – that of George IV (shown above receiving his regalia) in 1821. Sticking with the royal theme, the first article in the issue looks at the history of the display of royal arms in English churches, why they were displayed, and what the heraldry signifies. Lastly, for a bit of variety, on a recent visit to Norfolk, we came across the story of the bizarre burial of a Norfolk gentleman – we thought we would share that with you. As well as that article, the article on the royal arms has a Norfolk bias, illustrated solely with examples from the county – but that indicates what a rich source of treasures Norfolk is; we never tire of exploring its history and churches. We do hope you enjoy the issue.

Issue 8 – March 2023
£6.47 – £8.47 Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product pageThis issue begins with an exploration of a bit of a mystery – a rare thing in England – the shrine of a medieval saint with the relics still within it, it is a mystery how it survived, but it is even more of a puzzle trying to work out who the saint within was. The second article is about an unusual office associated with the English coronation, that of the King’s Champion; we look at the role and how it originated, and again there is an air of mystery about how it came into being. Then we look at an aspect of medieval iconography in an article examining the eastern origin of two of the most popular images in late medieval Western art – the Mass of St Gregory and the Man of Sorrows. There’s little mystery here about how they came to be: they came into the Western artistic lexicon through tall stories told to pilgrims! Then lastly, a fourth article is about a church building in a remote part of the Black Mountains in Wales, a building full of medieval treasures. There are two mysteries here: the first is the identity and story of the early medieval saint that the church is dedicated to; the second is how on earth this building has retained some of the unique medieval fixtures and fittings within it. I hope you enjoy reading it.
