We begin by taking you to one of the most previous medieval buildings in south Wales, the Norman priory church at Ewenny – the very stones of this place speak of the centuries of conflict that followed the Norman subjugation of the native Welsh in Glamorgan. Then moving on in time to the Early Modern period and we explore the origin of a (bad?) habit, the introduction of Tobacco and attitudes to smoking in this period. It was a love affair that would last well into modern times. Lastly, and as a follow up to a video which will appear on YouTube about Greenwich palace, the birthplace of Henry VIII – we look at Henry’s royal armoury based there, and the exquisite armour for warfare and tournament produced by the skilled craftsmen he and later sovereigns employed.

The options may be chosen on the product pageThe articles in this issue derive from a recent trip to North Yorkshire to reacquaint myself with the great medieval abbeys of the county after twenty years. It is difficult to choose what to write about, that can begin to do these incredible sites justice, but I have pulled out three unusual aspects of medieval monastic history to share. Firstly, I introduce a rare collection of medieval ghost stories originating in the scriptorium of Byland Abbey, that first came to the attention of scholars through the research of M. R. James in the 1920s. I then move on to look in some depth at the lives of the Carthusian monks of Mount Grace, using the evidence of the monk’s cell reconstructed in the 1980s following a thorough archaeological investigation. Lastly, I consider the post-dissolution history of Rievaulx Abbey and the role of its tumbling ruins as inspiration for the picturesque and romantic movements of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
