Issue 42 – January 2026
£6.47 – £8.47 Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product pageWe start this fourth full year of The Antiquary magazine by looking at things restored and destroyed. We take you first to Wymondham Abbey in Norfolk, a monastic church severely damaged at the time of the Dissolution of the Monasteries, we look at an artistic masterpiece of the twentieth century that has gone some way to restore dignity and colour to this great church. We then take a brief look at the history of one of England’s lost Tudor palaces, the palace of Richmond – itself a great artistic and historical loss. Richmond Palace was demolished in the aftermath of the downfall of Charles I in January of 1649, and our last article this month looks at the rather chilling events of his trial and execution.

Issue 38 – September 2025
£6.47 – £8.47 Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product pageIn the first article this month we take you on a journey into another time and to a rather otherworldly Welsh valley, that has been a place of pilgrimage since the seventh century. It contains the shrine of St Melangell, a mysterious and gentle female ascetic, whose cult fell into obscurity at the time of the Reformation. The shrine has seen a remarkable renaissance since the 1980s and now enriches modern day pilgrims. Then we move to England and to Peterborough, where we come face-to-face with someone rather more earthy, a rugged gravedigger called ‘Old Scarlett.’ His primary claim to fame was the burial of two queens and he has been commemorated for posterity by a curious monument. In contrast to the Welsh ascetic Melangell who ended her days in peace, in the final article we explore the last days of one of the queens Old Scarlett buried, the tragic Katherine of Aragon, and look at the funeral rituals at her burial that he would have witnessed.

Issue 36 – July 2025
£6.47 – £8.47 Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product pageThis issue marks the third anniversary of The Antiquary, and we present a trio of articles on diverse subjects. It is becoming quite fashionable these days to burst the bubble of commonly held historical myths, and in the first article, the late Dr Nicholas Groves addresses the dubious concept of the ‘devil’s door’ in English parish churches. The second article looks at the curious afterlife of ordinary medieval manuscript books, where they often survive as mere fragments reused within the book bindings of the printed books that replaced them. Lastly, we look at another extraordinary reuse, this time of a building, as we explore the history of one of the major projects of Henry VIII’s early reign, Bridewell Palace in London, and its later function as the most notorious of all English workhouses.

Issue 24 – July 2024
£6.47 – £8.47 Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product pageWelcome to the July 2024 issue of The Antiquary. Some of you may have seen the recent video I released on YouTube about the lost palace of Whitehall, the principal royal palace in Tudor and Stuart London. In this issue, I begin by looking at three terracotta busts, portrait heads that were part of the royal collection at Whitehall and somehow managed to survive the fire that consumed the palace in 1698, to be rediscovered in a rag-and-bone shop in the 1760s. Then we look at another extraordinary lost structure, Old London Bridge, which has long since been knocked down; it didn’t fall down as the nursery rhyme suggests! As usual, there is always a thread connecting the various articles, and the thread between the first article and the second is Cardinal John Fisher, Bishop of Rochester; he commissioned the terracotta heads, and following his unjust execution at the hands of Henry VIII, his real head ended up on a spike on London Bridge. The third article looks at the survival rather than the loss of historic buildings, and we look at the twelfth-century houses in the city of Lincoln – again, there is a royal theme, for recent research suggests that one of these was an English royal palace.t I do hope you enjoy the issue, which marks the end of the second year of this publication, and I want to thank you for all of your support over that period of that time – there are lots more to come!

Issue 15 – October 2023
£6.47 – £8.47 Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product pageWelcome to the October 2023 issue of The Antiquary. In this month’s issue we first take you on a journey to a remote and hidden chapel to see some stained glass commissioned by a member of Henry VIII’s household from the royal glazier no less – it is a fine and rare work of art. Then we explore with you one of the great lost structures of Tudor England, the great Palace of Whitehall, its history and its layout. Lastly, in a continuation of last month’s article on funeral hatchments, we turn to the matter of funeral achievements and the practice of ‘heraldic’ funerals in medieval and early modern England.

Issue 1 – August 2022
£6.47 – £8.47 Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product pageQuite unintentionally, but with serendipity, the editor is rather glad that the articles offered this month have themed themselves – in essence, the first three articles are all about the way the genius of individuals can be realised through a sharing of ideas and how that can infect others with a creative spark. We begin by looking at Sir Thomas More and how his connection with the great thinkers of his age led to the publication of his magnum opus ‘Utopia’, a book that launched the artistic career of Henry VIII’s court painter Hans Holbein. Then in a profusely illustrated article, we look at one of the delicious works of the ecclesiastical designer Sir Ninian Comper and how his relationship with the Duke of Newcastle and their joint love of the Middle Ages resulted in the creation of a Gothic, devotional fantasy at Egmanton in Nottinghamshire which still delights us today. Lastly, because the editor fancied being a little askew, the final article focuses on a man who couldn’t be more different to the gregarious More and Comper, a man who withdrew from the world: his name is John Bigg, a peculiar misanthrope – whose story is both odd and unresolved.
