Issue 20 – March 2024
£6.47 – £8.47 Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product pageWelcome to the February 2024 issue of the Antiquary. This month we begin by exploring something of the stark reality of life in Georgian Britain, looking at the gin craze of the middle of the eighteenth century, that brought great hardship to the already struggling working poor of England’s cities. Then we move on from the plight of the poor to the fancies of the super-rich, and we take you on a visit to St Lawrence’s, West Wycombe, in Buckinghamshire, a building that is half folly, half church – built by a grand tourist in the 1760s to express his love of the classical world. Lastly, we move further back in time to the fifteenth century as we look at the creation of the Nuremburg Chronicle, one of the earliest illustrated books printed. There is lots for you to enjoy.

£6.47 – £8.47 Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product pageWelcome to the September 2023 issue of The Antiquary. This month, there are two related articles on the British coronation regalia; the first tells the fascinating story of Colonel Blood, who audaciously tried to steal the regalia from the Tower of London in 1671. The second article on the theme focuses on the crown that Blood stole, the now-lost state crown of Charles II made in 1661 and broken up in 1714. Then, on a completely unrelated note, we look at the tradition of heraldic funeral hatchments, the first of a two-part series on heraldic funerals and funeral achievements.

Issue 11 – June 2023
£6.47 – £8.47 Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product pageWelcome to the June 2023 issue of The Antiquary. Summer is with us, and I am currently out and about doing what I enjoy the most, visiting sites across Britain with my camera – finding beautiful places and objects to share with all of you later in the year – I hope you have an equally enjoyable, restful and peaceful summer. In this summer issue, I bring you three articles. Firstly, I explore the extraordinary story of the development of the saintly cult of King Henry VI, whose graves, first at Chertsey and then at Windsor, became the focus of popular devotion. Then I explore a peculiar character that was common in late medieval European art and folklore, the Wodewose (pronounced ‘wood-wus’) – the wild man, and why such a figure was so popular. Lastly, I take you on a photographic tour of one of England’s most enchanting churches, Inglesham in Wiltshire, and explore why this beautiful building is so significant. I hope you enjoy the issue.
