We start off by exploring the history of a place that has been hallowed by years of Christian history, prayer and devotion, Lastingham in Yorkshire. We look at the architectural and archaeological legacy that this long devotion has left behind. In the second article we head to England’s capital and to Westminster Abbey, the burial place of kings, where curiously the vast majority of sovereigns are buried in graves that unmarked by memorials and monuments – we look at the hidden subterranean vaults below Henry VII’s chapel that hold the remains of the Stuart and Hanoverian dynasties. Lastly, we share with you the eighteenth-century portrait genre of the ‘conversation piece’ looking in depth at some fine examples of this expressive form of painting unique to the Georgians.

With the coronation of King Charles III now fast approaching, it may well be all over by the time you get your copy of the magazine. We have decided to give you an issue with a royal flavour. There are two articles on the history of the coronation itself – the first looks at the extraordinary elements of Catholic ceremonial and regalia within the ceremony, which survive the English Reformation. The second looks at the most extravagant and absurd coronation – that of George IV (shown above receiving his regalia) in 1821. Sticking with the royal theme, the first article in the issue looks at the history of the display of royal arms in English churches, why they were displayed, and what the heraldry signifies. Lastly, for a bit of variety, on a recent visit to Norfolk, we came across the story of the bizarre burial of a Norfolk gentleman – we thought we would share that with you. As well as that article, the article on the royal arms has a Norfolk bias, illustrated solely with examples from the county – but that indicates what a rich source of treasures Norfolk is; we never tire of exploring its history and churches.
