This issue of the Antiquary, which marks our four year anniversary, sees us move between the courtroom, the workshop, and the dragon-haunted landscape of England’s countryside. We first conclude the unhappy story of Dr William Dodd; the fashionable cleric whose ham-fisted attempt at forgery brought him to the gallows at Tyburn and helped to overturn the severities of the bloody code. We then turn to the remarkable trade in medieval alabasters, small, brilliantly painted devotional panels that carried the skill of English craftsmen across medieval Europe. Finally, we briefly relate several tales from English folklore that refer to battles with ‘worms,’ i.e. dragons, and how these stories ultimately link into the broader Christian theme of good overcoming evil.

    Issue 32 – March 2025

King George IV was one of the most colourful of British sovereigns, and in the first article of this month’s Antiquary, we look at the little-known history of his official residence – Carlton House. This constantly evolving and very ostentatious building was in many respects an expression of George’s personality, and very oddly, towards the end of his life, he had it demolished! The next article focuses on a location in London that was less than two miles away from Carlton House – Tyburn gallows.  For many centuries it was the city’s primary place for public executions, and we trace the chilling history of the place, the methods used and the stories of some of those executed there, many of whom were martyrs for religious conscience. Then, in the final article, something a little more sublime – we discuss the fascinating evolution of the hagiography, the holy story of St Edmund, king and martyr, who was once the patron saint of England.  However, the article once again ends in destruction I’m afraid – the breaking up of the medieval shrine of St Edmund by Henry VIII’s commissioners in 1538.
