Thornham Parva

There are two very involved articles in this month’s Antiquary. We begin with a detailed exploration of the Thornham Parva Retable, a remarkable fourteenth-century panel painting housed in a remote church in Suffolk. The retable, an altarpiece, depicts the crucifixion of Christ surrounded by saints.  The painting’s iconography and stylistic features suggest it was originally created for the Dominican priory in Thetford in Norfolk, around the 1330s and 1340s, but how it survived the Reformation is a bit of a mystery. 

Then we delve into the very complex subject matter of the Great Seal of the United Kingdom, focusing on its purpose, significance and origin and the development of the office of Lord Chancellor. This fascinating subject highlights the extraordinary continuity of tradition in the administrative practices of the United Kingdom.
