There are no Anglo-Saxon domestic buildings surviving above ground. If we wish to understand anything of Anglo-Saxon architecture, it is really to surviving churches that we have to turn. There are around four hundred churches in England with known Anglo-Saxon fabric. During the later Middle Ages, churches were at the very heart of the religious and social life of their communities, and they were frequently rebuilt, so very few of these four hundred sites have substantial Anglo- Saxon remains. With a few exceptions, most of the work that survives is late, dating from the century directly before the Norman Conquest. In this issue of the Antiquary, we explore a selection of the more substantial and rewarding Anglo-Saxon churches, looking at the key architectural features of these buildings, the historiography of Anglo-Saxon architecture, the date of these structures and their patronage. Before we turn to that task, we set the historical, political and religious context in which these buildings were constructed. We hope you will forgive us presenting what is a very complex subject matter in broad and sweeping terms.
