It contains the shrine of St Melangell, a mysterious and gentle female ascetic, whose cult fell into obscurity at the time of the Reformation. The shrine has seen a remarkable renaissance since the 1980s and now enriches modern day pilgrims. Then we move to England and to Peterborough, where we come face-to-face with someone rather more earthy, a rugged gravedigger called ‘Old Scarlett.’ His primary claim to fame was the burial of two queens and he has been commemorated for posterity by a curious monument. In contrast to the Welsh ascetic Melangell who ended her days in peace, in the final article we explore the last days of one of the queens Old Scarlett buried, the tragic Katherine of Aragon, and look at the funeral rituals at her burial that he would have witnessed.
