We start this fourth full year of The Antiquary magazine by looking at things restored and destroyed. We take you first to Wymondham Abbey in Norfolk, a monastic church severely damaged at the time of the Dissolution of the Monasteries, we look at an artistic masterpiece of the twentieth century that has gone some way to restore dignity and colour to this great church. We then take a brief look at the history of one of England’s lost Tudor palaces, the palace of Richmond – itself a great artistic and historical loss. Richmond Palace was demolished in the aftermath of the downfall of Charles I in January of 1649, and our last article this month looks at the rather chilling events of his trial and execution.

We begin this month with an article on a collection of medieval works of art of staggering beauty – the rood screen, lectern and antiphoner in Ranworth church in the Norfolk Broads. We explore their purpose and the complex iconography on them. The pages of this magazine can’t possibly do justice to this glorious work, so we will be uploading a full set of images to the Antiquary website for you to peruse – the website link is below. This is followed by the curious tale of a man who went from complete obscurity in the Welsh marches, to being briefly the focus of London life and gossip.  His story is an enduring one, but was this man, Thomas Parr, really one-hundred and fifty-two when he died?  The last article continues the theme of London life, and looks at the emergence of coffee culture in the seventeenth century and the influence of coffee houses on freedom of expression and the development of England’s political and social culture.

The churches of Norfolk contain one of the most remarkable collections of late medieval art in Western Europe – they are a series of panel paintings incorporated into screen work, most notably rood, or as they are more appropriately called, chancel screens. Some of these paintings are of such fine quality that they are of international importance. If they were hung in an art gallery in a major city, they would be well known and acclaimed – but because they are to be found in isolated churches, they are not appreciated as much as they ought to be. In this issue of The Antiquary, we want to share examples of this great artistic legacy to give some sense of the significance, purpose, and motives behind their creation.  In many cases, these works of art, like our medieval churches in England in general, are now fragile and perilous. Unless they become better known, we risk losing an artistic treasure and essential source material for our medieval ancestors’ religious and social life.

This month’s issue focuses on various buildings and objects related to the turbulent time of the English Reformation or a response to it. We begin with an article on the remains of two splendid fifteenth-century vestments from Norfolk, which survive due to recycling after the Reformation. Then an article on ‘ritualism’ in the twentieth-century Church of England and a set of baroque furnishings by Martin Travers for a church in Berkshire.  We look at the history of a woodcut found in a book printed in the reign of Mary Tudor, a book that formed part of the re-equipping of English churches after the iconoclasm of the reign of Edward VI.  Lastly, we introduce you to battered painted panels from a screen in a Norfolk church and discuss what these panels tell us about devotion in early sixteenth-century Norfolk.
