In this month’s issue we first take you on a journey to a remote and hidden chapel to see some stained glass commissioned by a member of Henry VIII’s household from the royal glazier no less – it is a fine and rare work of art. Then we explore with you one of the great lost structures of Tudor England, the great Palace of Whitehall, its history and its layout. Lastly, in a continuation of last month’s article on funeral hatchments, we turn to the matter of funeral achievements and the practice of ‘heraldic’ funerals in medieval and early modern England.

Issue 14 – September 2023
£6.47 – £8.47 Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product pageWelcome to the September 2023 issue of The Antiquary. This month, there are two related articles on the British coronation regalia; the first tells the fascinating story of Colonel Blood, who audaciously tried to steal the regalia from the Tower of London in 1671. The second article on the theme focuses on the crown that Blood stole, the now-lost state crown of Charles II made in 1661 and broken up in 1714. Then, on a completely unrelated note, we look at the tradition of heraldic funeral hatchments, the first of a two-part series on heraldic funerals and funeral achievements.

Issue 10 – May 2023
£6.47 – £8.47 Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product pageWelcome to the May 2023 issue of The Antiquary. With the coronation of King Charles III now fast approaching, it may well be all over by the time you get your copy of the magazine. We have decided to give you an issue with a royal flavour. There are two articles on the history of the coronation itself – the first looks at the extraordinary elements of Catholic ceremonial and regalia within the ceremony, which survive the English Reformation. The second looks at the most extravagant and absurd coronation – that of George IV (shown above receiving his regalia) in 1821. Sticking with the royal theme, the first article in the issue looks at the history of the display of royal arms in English churches, why they were displayed, and what the heraldry signifies. Lastly, for a bit of variety, on a recent visit to Norfolk, we came across the story of the bizarre burial of a Norfolk gentleman – we thought we would share that with you. As well as that article, the article on the royal arms has a Norfolk bias, illustrated solely with examples from the county – but that indicates what a rich source of treasures Norfolk is; we never tire of exploring its history and churches. We do hope you enjoy the issue.
