Issue 18 – January 2024
£6.47 – £8.47 Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product pageIn this issue, we take you on a visit to one of the finest small churches in England – the delightful Norman gem at Kilpeck in Herefordshire where we explore the meaning behind its array of mid twelfth century sculpture. Then moving forward in time, we explore instructions that King Edward IV gave for his tomb in St George’s chapel Windsor, which had they been carried out would have formed one of the most lavish funerary ensembles in western Europe. We look at what remains of the king’s intentions, and what remains of the king himself! The lastly, we look at a tradition that has long fallen out of use, the funerary hearse, we explore what a hearse is, what a hearse isn’t, and why this piece of funerary paraphenelia is named after a piece of farm equipment.

Issue 13 – August 2023
£6.47 – £8.47 Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product pageWelcome to the August 2023 issue of The Antiquary. In this issue, we have two articles that are about artistic idealism. Firstly, we look at a couple of medieval monuments in Derbyshire created in the fifteenth century; they are among the finest examples of the sculptors’ craft and portray an idealised image of those commemorated and express an inflated view of their societal position. In the religious climate of the late Middle Ages, people used their earthly resources to ensure that they were remembered once they had departed in the prayers of the living. In the second article, we look briefly at the tradition of employing the poor at funerals to pray for the better off. Lastly, we return to idealism and look at the story of a man who was among the wealthiest individuals of his age. He used his wealth to improve the lot of others and tame a wilderness, a landscape that, two hundred years after his death, still inspires people today.

Issue 3 – October 2022
£6.47 – £8.47 Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product pageDeath in the Western world today is often sanitised and hidden from view. Medieval people had the same fears as we have about death but were perhaps more sanguine and more prepared to reflect on the brevity of life than we are now because death was less hidden. Mortality among the young was high; pestilence carried people off with great regularity – people often lived in close-knit communities and faced the reality of death daily. People usually died at home, and the sight of dead bodies tightly wrapped in figure-hugging shrouds, buried in shallow graves within the churchyard, or for the wealthier members of society below the floor of the parish church itself, was part of the typical medieval life experience. In this issue, we explore the subject of medieval death and the monuments that medieval people erected to their dead.
