Issue 28 – November 2024
£6.47 – £8.47 Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product pageThe near-total destruction of the medieval Palace of Westminster, the residence of English medieval kings, is without question one of England’s greatest cultural losses. In this issue of the Antiquary, we explore the history and layout of the palace and look at some of the great artistic treasures it once contained. We examine how what was once the primary residence of kings became the political and legal hub of the English nation. We then move on to look at the inadequacy of the palace as a seat of both Parliament and the law courts in the eighteenth century, the various proposals for its replacement and the piecemeal process of destruction that culminated in the inevitability of the great fire of 1834. Lastly, as it is November, the third article looks at the events of November 1605 and the Gunpowder Plot, and how the complex and chaotic geography of the medieval palace enabled this plot to very nearly succeed.

Issue 21 – April 2024
£6.47 – £8.47 Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product pageWe begin the magazine this month by looking at an aspect of the medieval ceremonial of English medieval Holy Week. Focusing on the ritual of the sepulchre and the vigil, we look at the material evidence for the sepulchre and whether the objects that are generally known as Easter Sepulchres are any such a thing at all. Then we head to south Lincolnshire where we introduce to a curious medieval bridge at Crowland, which has an interesting history and no practical purpose. Lastly, we look at the hagiography of St Guthlac, the founder of Crowland, an ascetic known as the English St Anthony, and who lived the final years of his life in a converted long barrow!

Issue 5 – December 2022
£6.47 – £8.47 Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product pageDecember’s issue of The Antiquary is suitably seasonal, with three articles that provide a bit of Christmas colour. The first article is on a building that comes alive at this time of year, an atmospheric medieval house that is very much at its best with a fire lit and candles burning. Then an article on two men who rarely lit fires and rarely lit candles, two misers who were the inspiration for Dicken’s character Ebenezer Scrooge – there was not much Christmas cheer in the mansions of the Elwes family. Then lastly, an article on the history of Father Christmas, tracing the origins of this popular Christmas character, who brings good cheer to hearth and home, in the song and folklore of the late Middle Ages.
