Welcome to the May 2023 issue of The Antiquary.  With the coronation of King Charles III now fast approaching, it may well be all over by the time you get your copy of the magazine. We have decided to give you an issue with a royal flavour. There are two articles on the history of the coronation itself – the first looks at the extraordinary elements of Catholic ceremonial and regalia within the ceremony, which survive the English Reformation. The second looks at the most extravagant and absurd coronation – that of George IV (shown above receiving his regalia) in 1821. Sticking with the royal theme, the first article in the issue looks at the history of the display of royal arms in English churches, why they were displayed, and what the heraldry signifies. Lastly, for a bit of variety, on a recent visit to Norfolk, we came across the story of the bizarre burial of a Norfolk gentleman – we thought we would share that with you. As well as that article, the article on the royal arms has a Norfolk bias, illustrated solely with examples from the county – but that indicates what a rich source of treasures Norfolk is; we never tire of exploring its history and churches. We do hope you enjoy the issue.

Death in the Western world today is often sanitised and hidden from view. Medieval people had the same fears as we have about death but were perhaps more sanguine and more prepared to reflect on the brevity of life than we are now because death was less hidden. Mortality among the young was high; pestilence carried people off with great regularity – people often lived in close-knit communities and faced the reality of death daily. People usually died at home, and the sight of dead bodies tightly wrapped in figure-hugging shrouds, buried in shallow graves within the churchyard, or for the wealthier members of society below the floor of the parish church itself, was part of the typical medieval life experience. In this issue, we explore the subject of medieval death and the monuments that medieval people erected to their dead.

This month’s issue is a miscellany of articles relating to remarkable art and architectural survivals. We have the story of a man of great ambition who was so desirous to be remembered forever that he laid down four monuments to himself, only one of which remains and is among the most extraordinary in England. Then the legend of a youth who inherited a kingdom and gave it all up for a life of prayer and the remarkable architectural legacy he left behind. Lastly, two articles on objects and furnishings that really should have been destroyed in the English Reformation – a set of medieval vestments found in a remote part of Lincolnshire and used by a recusant family that tells the story of their enduring Catholicism; and lastly, a church in an equally isolated spot in Wales, where despite the odds, it retains the rustic remains of its medieval rood screen, within a building of great charm and beauty.
