This month I have decided to depart from my usual pattern, and bring to you two articles, rather than my usual three.  I found as I was writing the first article, that the character I was writing about was so compelling, and the intrigue he was embroiled in so complex, that he deserved more extensive attention than I would usually give. Titus Oates, was a compulsive liar, who in the pursuit of personal renown was responsible for the deaths of numerous men.  His pathology is intriguing and difficult to understand, but he tapped into the anti-Catholic hysteria of his time.   I felt that the ugliness of the character and story of Titus Oates, required an article that examined, in some depth, a work of great beauty – and so in my second article this month I focus on the ‘Golden Chapel’ at Tong in Shropshire.  It is an incredible piece of highly decorated late medieval architecture.  As well as looking at the works of art and memorials within it, I look too at the motivation, piety and devotion behind the creation of this extraordinary space.

Welcome to the August 2023 issue of The Antiquary.  In this issue, we have two articles that are about artistic idealism.  Firstly, we look at a couple of medieval monuments in Derbyshire created in the fifteenth century; they are among the finest examples of the sculptors’ craft and portray an idealised image of those commemorated and express an inflated view of their societal position.  In the religious climate of the late Middle Ages, people used their earthly resources to ensure that they were remembered once they had departed in the prayers of the living.  In the second article, we look briefly at the tradition of employing the poor at funerals to pray for the better off.  Lastly, we return to idealism and look at the story of a man who was among the wealthiest individuals of his age. He used his wealth to improve the lot of others and tame a wilderness, a landscape that, two hundred years after his death, still inspires people today.

Welcome to the July 2023 issue of The Antiquary, and in this issue, we celebrate a full year of the magazine. I thank all of you subscribers and supporters who have made this possible. This issue is one of our periodic albums focusing on a particular theme in the History of Art. It looks closely at the portrayal of angels, with images from both an English and Welsh context, primarily from the Middle Ages. The essay running through the issue focuses on the textual sources for the iconography of angels, both the biblical and broader tradition of the Church, and the influence of Pseudo-Dionysius on the understanding of angelology. I do hope you enjoy this issue.

In this issue, we return to our usual miscellany format with articles on various subjects.  Firstly, early printing and the ground-breaking work of William Caxton and Wynkyn de Worde.  There are articles on panel paintings – one a Doom painting portraying the Last Judgement, the second a piece of English state iconography, a painting of the Spanish Armada. Lastly, a longer article looks at the extraordinary survival of a Saxon chapel, long encased in a farmhouse and rediscovered in the nineteenth century—plenty for you to enjoy and whet your historical appetite.

This month’s issue is a miscellany of articles relating to remarkable art and architectural survivals. We have the story of a man of great ambition who was so desirous to be remembered forever that he laid down four monuments to himself, only one of which remains and is among the most extraordinary in England. Then the legend of a youth who inherited a kingdom and gave it all up for a life of prayer and the remarkable architectural legacy he left behind. Lastly, two articles on objects and furnishings that really should have been destroyed in the English Reformation – a set of medieval vestments found in a remote part of Lincolnshire and used by a recusant family that tells the story of their enduring Catholicism; and lastly, a church in an equally isolated spot in Wales, where despite the odds, it retains the rustic remains of its medieval rood screen, within a building of great charm and beauty.
