The Apostle St Paul wrote to his companion Timothy: “For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.” In this issue of The Antiquary are two articles that relate to money – its power to corrupt and its power to reform – both are stories full of piercing sorrows. Firstly, we have the initial instalment of a biographical account of a Georgian clergyman called Dr William Dodd, who was known in his lifetime as the ‘Macaroni Parson.’ The article traces Dodd’s journey from the son of a modest Lincolnshire vicar to a celebrated London preacher, whose brilliance, vanity and pecuniary extravagance led to scandal and ruin. The second article surveys the origin and evolution of English money, from Anglo-Saxon pennies to the splendid gold and silver coinage of the late Middle Ages, revealing how currency was used to express royal authority, and how English medieval kings controlled the production of coin, and through it, safeguarded the prosperity and stability of their kingdom.

This month’s issue focuses on various buildings and objects related to the turbulent time of the English Reformation or a response to it. We begin with an article on the remains of two splendid fifteenth-century vestments from Norfolk, which survive due to recycling after the Reformation. Then an article on ‘ritualism’ in the twentieth-century Church of England and a set of baroque furnishings by Martin Travers for a church in Berkshire.  We look at the history of a woodcut found in a book printed in the reign of Mary Tudor, a book that formed part of the re-equipping of English churches after the iconoclasm of the reign of Edward VI.  Lastly, we introduce you to battered painted panels from a screen in a Norfolk church and discuss what these panels tell us about devotion in early sixteenth-century Norfolk.

Quite unintentionally, but with serendipity, the editor is rather glad that the articles offered this month have themed themselves – in essence, the first three articles are all about the way the genius of individuals can be realised through a sharing of ideas and how that can infect others with a creative spark. We begin by looking at Sir Thomas More and how his connection with the great thinkers of his age led to the publication of his magnum opus ‘Utopia’, a book that launched the artistic career of Henry VIII’s court painter Hans Holbein. Then in a profusely illustrated article, we look at one of the delicious works of the ecclesiastical designer Sir Ninian Comper and how his relationship with the Duke of Newcastle and their joint love of the Middle Ages resulted in the creation of a Gothic, devotional fantasy at Egmanton in Nottinghamshire which still delights us today.  Lastly, because the editor fancied being a little askew, the final article focuses on a man who couldn’t be more different to the gregarious More and Comper, a man who withdrew from the world: his name is John Bigg, a peculiar misanthrope – whose story is both odd and unresolved.
