£6.47 – £8.47 Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product pageChristmas is once again upon us, and in this final issue of The Antiquary for 2025, we begin with a suitably seasonal offering – a niche subject, I know – we trace the history of the Christmas pudding. Is it a recent or an ancient bit of English tradition? Read on to find out! After the stodge of Christmas pudding, something a little lighter – we look at the great skill of Tudor and Stuart miniature painters and how they were able to capture through their delicate art, the very essence of the people they depicted. Lastly, as we look towards the spring again, some places for you to visit – we take you on a tour of two of my favourite churches in Oxfordshire, I extoll their timeless texture and the treasures they contain.

Issue 17 – December 2023
£6.47 – £8.47 Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product pageThe December 2023 issue has a suitably seasonal theme. We begin by exploring the fascinating subject of iconography and the sources behind the traditional depictions of the Nativity of Christ in medieval Art. Then we introduce you to the diarist and parson James Woodforde, looking at some of his diary entries and the vivid glimpse they give of the way this Norfolk clergyman celebrated Christmas in the Georgian period. Continuing with the theme of celebration, in the last article we explore the Georgian love for spiced wine, or as they called it ‘punch’. We even give you a recipe for a punch that both Charles Dickens and Parson Woodforde would have known and enjoyed.

Issue 5 – December 2022
£6.47 – £8.47 Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product pageDecember’s issue of The Antiquary is suitably seasonal, with three articles that provide a bit of Christmas colour. The first article is on a building that comes alive at this time of year, an atmospheric medieval house that is very much at its best with a fire lit and candles burning. Then an article on two men who rarely lit fires and rarely lit candles, two misers who were the inspiration for Dicken’s character Ebenezer Scrooge – there was not much Christmas cheer in the mansions of the Elwes family. Then lastly, an article on the history of Father Christmas, tracing the origins of this popular Christmas character, who brings good cheer to hearth and home, in the song and folklore of the late Middle Ages.
