In this issue of The Antiquary, we visit two places that have been shaped by patrons with taste, means, and very particular aesthetic ideas of their own. We begin at All Saints, North Cerney, in the Gloucestershire Cotswolds – a modest but beautiful medieval parish church, which was transformed from 1909 onwards by the partnership between a ritualist rector, a gifted architect, and a young lord of the manor with a good eye and the money to indulge it. Their work restored colour to a dark and neglected interior, and the result of their collaboration is a space that feels utterly timeless. We then travel to the outskirts of London and to Kew, where we explore how three generations of the Hanoverian royal family created for themselves a rural idyll and retreat from court life in a succession of houses, all surrounded by extraordinary gardens. Here the story is one of loss as much as it is of creation: for all that is left of this inventive visual legacy is a single red-brick house and the Royal Botanic Gardens, which in part preserve the aesthetic legacy of the Georgian past.
