Welcome to the March 2026 issue of the Antiquary.  This month we have three articles in which strands and themes are once again woven together.  In the first article, we explore the form and purpose of churchyard crosses and their importance to the Passiontide ceremonies, communal worship and traditions of medieval Catholicism.  One of the best surviving crosses is in the churchyard at Somersby in Lincolnshire, the birthplace of the poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson and we use that place as a springboard to explore Tennyson’s neurotic, dysfunctional, and status-conscious family. Continuing the theme of status consciousness, the last article focuses on the medieval and Tudor practice of ‘sumptuary’ legislation, laws that controlled the material and style of clothing worn by the English people, and why it was so important to the ruling powers to maintain social class distinctions through cloth.
