The Northumberland Bestiary was made in England around 1250–1260: a small, densely illustrated book cataloguing the natural world as the medieval mind understood it, part zoology and part moral instruction. Its 112 pen-and-ink drawings, tinted with coloured wash, sit alongside descriptions drawn from Pliny and the Physiologus tradition — lions, elephants and crocodiles rendered with the same straight-faced conviction as griffins, unicorns and the bonnacon, a beast said to defend itself by other means entirely.

The manuscript spent over two centuries in the library at Alnwick Castle before being sold in 1990; it was acquired by the J. Paul Getty Museum in 2007, where it remains today as Ms. 100.

This year’s calendar draws twelve of its illustrations into a full-colour A4 format, one for each month of 2027, opening and closing with two further scenes on the covers.
