We take a brief look at some interesting examples of medieval woodwork in Suffolk churches that escaped iconoclasm, and discuss their uses.  The consideration of that subject leads to an examination of a very fine tomb in one of the churches. The story of the tomb, and the people commemorated, is a prelude to a discussion about the power of patronage, and how the social ties and obligations that bound a medieval king or lord to his retainers might be expressed through the use of livery collars.
