Welcome to the June 2023 issue of The Antiquary. Welcome to the April 2023 issue of The Antiquary. This month, we give you a mix of articles and features on both saints and sinners. We introduce you to a delightful church in the countryside near Berkshire in southeast England, with glorious medieval wall paintings and the tomb of a man and his wife, who may have had blue blood. Then an article on a fascinating cave complex in the wilds of Derbyshire that also has strong royal connections and may have been the hermitage of a deposed Anglo-Saxon king over a thousand years ago. Dick Turpin, the highwayman, was no king but a scoundrel, and in the following article, we look at his life and wicked exploits. We explore how his reputation was altered and somewhat improved by the novelist’s pen. Lastly, an article about Christian iconography looks at the mysterious legend of the girdle of the Blessed Virgin Mary, how it originated and the surviving relics of Mary’s belt. The churches of Norfolk contain one of the most remarkable collections of late medieval art in Western Europe – they are a series of panel paintings incorporated into screen work, most notably rood, or as they are more appropriately called, chancel screens. Some of these paintings are of such fine quality that they are of international importance. If they were hung in an art gallery in a major city, they would be well known and acclaimed – but because they are to be found in isolated churches, they are not appreciated as much as they ought to be. In this issue of The Antiquary, we want to share examples of this great artistic legacy to give some sense of the significance, purpose, and motives behind their creation. In many cases, these works of art, like our medieval churches in England in general, are now fragile and perilous. Unless they become better known, we risk losing an artistic treasure and essential source material for our medieval ancestors’ religious and social life.
