The options may be chosen on the product pageKing George IV was one of the most colourful of British sovereigns, and in the first article of this month’s Antiquary, we look at the little-known history of his official residence – Carlton House. This constantly evolving and very ostentatious building was in many respects an expression of George’s personality, and very oddly, towards the end of his life, he had it demolished! The next article focuses on a location in London that was less than two miles away from Carlton House – Tyburn gallows. For many centuries it was the city’s primary place for public executions, and we trace the chilling history of the place, the methods used and the stories of some of those executed there, many of whom were martyrs for religious conscience. Then, in the final article, something a little more sublime – we discuss the fascinating evolution of the hagiography, the holy story of St Edmund, king and martyr, who was once the patron saint of England. However, the article once again ends in destruction I’m afraid – the breaking up of the medieval shrine of St Edmund by Henry VIII’s commissioners in 1538.

Issue 10 – May 2023
£6.47 – £8.47 Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product pageWelcome to the May 2023 issue of The Antiquary. With the coronation of King Charles III now fast approaching, it may well be all over by the time you get your copy of the magazine. We have decided to give you an issue with a royal flavour. There are two articles on the history of the coronation itself – the first looks at the extraordinary elements of Catholic ceremonial and regalia within the ceremony, which survive the English Reformation. The second looks at the most extravagant and absurd coronation – that of George IV (shown above receiving his regalia) in 1821. Sticking with the royal theme, the first article in the issue looks at the history of the display of royal arms in English churches, why they were displayed, and what the heraldry signifies. Lastly, for a bit of variety, on a recent visit to Norfolk, we came across the story of the bizarre burial of a Norfolk gentleman – we thought we would share that with you. As well as that article, the article on the royal arms has a Norfolk bias, illustrated solely with examples from the county – but that indicates what a rich source of treasures Norfolk is; we never tire of exploring its history and churches. We do hope you enjoy the issue.
