Queen Eleanor of Castile, the first wife of King Edward I, is one of the most remarkable women to grace the pages of English history. Assessing her life and reputation in 1587, the chronicler Ralph Holinshed described her as a godly and modest princess, full of pity, and one that showed much favour to the English nation, ready to relieve every man’s grief that sustained wrong, and to make them friends that were at discord, so far as in her lay. Strong praise indeed! In this issue of the Antiquary, as space allows, we will discuss very briefly Eleanor’s life. We will consider the turbulent time in which she lived and how this impacted her life and relationship with her husband. However, we want to focus attention primarily on the circumstances of her death and her burial. In the wake of her death, as he coped with his lingering grief, King Edward I would commission a quite remarkable series of monuments in memory of his late queen, and some of these great monuments still survive.
