There is a medley of articles in this month’s issue, ranging in time from the seventh to the eighteenth century. We start off by exploring the history of a place that has been hallowed by years of Christian history, prayer and devotion, Lastingham in Yorkshire. We look at the architectural and archaeological legacy that this long devotion has left behind. In the second article we head to England’s capital and to Westminster Abbey, the burial place of kings, where curiously the vast majority of sovereigns are buried in graves that unmarked by memorials and monuments – we look at the hidden subterranean vaults below Henry VII’s chapel that hold the remains of the Stuart and Hanoverian dynasties.  Lastly, we share with you the eighteenth-century portrait genre of the ‘conversation piece’ looking in depth at some fine examples of this expressive form of painting unique to the Georgians.

We begin the magazine this month by looking at an aspect of the medieval ceremonial of English medieval Holy Week.  Focusing on the ritual of the sepulchre and the vigil, we look at the material evidence for the sepulchre and whether the objects that are generally known as Easter Sepulchres are any such a thing at all.  Then we head to south Lincolnshire where we introduce to a curious medieval bridge at Crowland, which has an interesting history and no practical purpose. Lastly, we look at the hagiography of St Guthlac, the founder of Crowland, an ascetic known as the English St Anthony, and who lived the final years of his life in a converted long barrow!

Welcome to the April 2023 issue of The Antiquary.  This month, we give you a mix of articles and features on both saints and sinners.  We introduce you to a delightful church in the countryside near Berkshire in southeast England, with glorious medieval wall paintings and the tomb of a man and his wife, who may have had blue blood.  Then an article on a fascinating cave complex in the wilds of Derbyshire that also has strong royal connections and may have been the hermitage of a deposed Anglo-Saxon king over a thousand years ago.  Dick Turpin, the highwayman, was no king but a scoundrel, and in the following article, we look at his life and wicked exploits. We explore how his reputation was altered and somewhat improved by the novelist’s pen.  Lastly, an article about Christian iconography looks at the mysterious legend of the girdle of the Blessed Virgin Mary, how it originated and the surviving relics of Mary’s belt.   We do hope you enjoy the issue.

In this issue, we return to our usual miscellany format with articles on various subjects.  Firstly, early printing and the ground-breaking work of William Caxton and Wynkyn de Worde.  There are articles on panel paintings – one a Doom painting portraying the Last Judgement, the second a piece of English state iconography, a painting of the Spanish Armada. Lastly, a longer article looks at the extraordinary survival of a Saxon chapel, long encased in a farmhouse and rediscovered in the nineteenth century—plenty for you to enjoy and whet your historical appetite.

This month’s issue is a miscellany of articles relating to remarkable art and architectural survivals. We have the story of a man of great ambition who was so desirous to be remembered forever that he laid down four monuments to himself, only one of which remains and is among the most extraordinary in England. Then the legend of a youth who inherited a kingdom and gave it all up for a life of prayer and the remarkable architectural legacy he left behind. Lastly, two articles on objects and furnishings that really should have been destroyed in the English Reformation – a set of medieval vestments found in a remote part of Lincolnshire and used by a recusant family that tells the story of their enduring Catholicism; and lastly, a church in an equally isolated spot in Wales, where despite the odds, it retains the rustic remains of its medieval rood screen, within a building of great charm and beauty.
